Eyelash Extensions: What You Need To Know Before The Procedure

Lash extensions are considered semi-permanent beauty aids that have gone mainstream in the industry. Widely offered in beauty salons and spas worldwide, women are now trying out this professional procedure whether for special events or for the enhancement of their daily look.

What are Eyelash Extensions?

According to Wikipedia, eyelash extension is a practice that enhances the length, thickness and fullness to natural eyelashes.

Lash extensions give an illusion of volume and depth of wearing a mascara while still looking like natural lashes. It is designed to enhance the look and shape of the eye in a way that looks natural and does not hinder everyday activities.

What are the most common types of eyelash extensions?

There are 3 types of lash extensions: silk, mink, and synthetic. Its size ranges from 6mm to 17mm depending on product brand and availability.

How do you apply lash extensions and how long does the procedure take?

Methods of applying the extensions include full strips, clusters, and individual, one-by-one extensions. The lashes are applied one at a time using a specially formulated, semi-permanent (cyanoacrylate-based) glue that will not irritate the eye nor damage the natural lash. The types of glue used in the procedure is based on one’s sensitivity.

Can getting eyelash extension cause harm or damage natural lashes?

No. If applied correctly and properly, they are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Be sure not to rub your eyes or tug or pull on the extensions because this can cause lash loss and even damage to your natural lashes. If lashes are applied properly and to each individual lash, they won’t fall out.

Will they feel weird?

Yes. Its like wearing fake lashes the whole time. It will take time (maybe 1 week max) getting used to the extra weight.

Will it affect my daily routine?

Positively! Getting extensions not only saves you from applying fake lashes and mascaras but it cuts down your daily makeup routine prep time significantly. It instantly gives you that ‘No MakeUp Look’ all day, everyday!

Any special precautions I need to keep in mind?

Rubbing your eyes is a big no-no. It is a big DON’T when you have lash extensions and it doesn’t matter whether you do it during shower, washing your face, or when you’re simply out and about.

How long do they last?

If you follow the do’s and don’ts religiously, your lash extensions can last a month. It usually falls out along with your natural lashes. Some people have longer/shorter hair growth cycles, but most people will need to get touch-ups or re-fills preferably every 3-4 weeks.

“Oils from makeup will shorten the life of the glue bond, as will rubbing, which might pull off your natural lashes, too. You don’t need to curl them or even wear mascara, but if you want mascara, apply a water-based one to the tips only (don’t use waterproof).” – BestHealthMag.Ca

Is it worth it?

Of course! Aside from making you look good 24/7, it also saves you from spending so much on eye makeup such as mascaras, lash serums and primers, false lashes, etc.

While it maybe considered as a beauty splurge, it ain’t bad treating yourself once in a while. You’ll get instantly hooked to it as what long-term extensions fans claim.

How much is it and where do I get them?

A full set of mink or synthetic lashes starts at $249. A 30-minute fill costs $49 while a 60-minute fill costs $99. Brands available are 3D-Beauty and NovaLash (for glittered ones).
